How many years does it take to get from junior to senior product designer? This question is inaccurate. The path to seniority does not depend solely on years of experience. It’s about a certain set of skills and behaviors that unlock the doors to promotion.
An interesting one! I am wondering what do you think - how can companies ensure a fair and objective evaluation for promotions based on these 5 areas of difference you mentioned, especially in companies without a formal career ladder?
Hey Karolina, we think it's quite impossible for companies without formal career ladders. Our whole point was that in such companies making the next step in your career and getting promoted is vague and not always based on actual performance and skills. What we think the main takeaway from the article is, that the five areas we mention are pretty universal. We wanted to increase awareness that developing skills in these five areas might lead to actual promotion in many companies. Hopefully, even in ones that don't cultivate formal ladders!

Jr. over here! I’ve only worked as a product designer at one company, so helpful to hear wisdom from a broader perspective. 👍
